Staff Rev. Jay Kelchner, Lead PastorPastor Jay came to Shady Grove in June of 2010. An Elder in the United Methodist Church, he attended Wesley Seminary in Washington, D.C. and received his Master of Divinity degree from the School of Theology at Virginia Union in Richmond, Virginia. A graduate of the University of Maryland, Jay is a huge Terrapin fan. In addition to his love for the Lord, he enjoys spending time with his wife and family, running, cycling, playing golf, and eating anything with chocolate in it. Rev. Brad Robins, Associate PastorBrad came to Shady Grove in 2000 as the Minister to Youth and Young Adults. After serving here for over nine years, he was licensed for local pastoral ministry by the United Methodist Church and appointed at Shady Grove to serve as our associate pastor. Brad grew up in the Virginia Beach area. He has been married to his wife Judy since 1997, and they have 3 children. In his personal time, Brad enjoys water skiing, running, and cooking. Rev. Cindy Lee, Minister of DiscipleshipCindy is a certified Director of Christian Education and an ordained Deacon in full connection in the United Methodist Church. She graduated from Virginia Tech with a BS in Clothing, Textiles and Related Arts, Extension and Secondary Education and later with a MA in Christian Education from Scarritt College in Nashville. She has worked in the local church setting since 1983. Cindy enjoys music, singing in the Richmond Symphony Chorus, baking cookies for VT tailgate parties, sewing, helping others, and traveling. Dr. Ernie Babel, Minister with Seniors and HomeboundErnie joined the ministry team at Shady Grove in February 2007. He is an Elder in the Virginia Annual Conference and has served in pastoral ministry since 1969. He received a Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degree from Asbury Theological Seminary and Doctor of Ministry degree from Candler School of Theology, Emory University. Pastor Ernie grew up outside Buffalo, NY and served his first two pastoral appointments in Western New York State before moving to Virginia in 1976. He enjoys woodworking, mechanics, music, sports programs and thoughtful authors. He and his wife, Ann, have two grown sons, two grown daughters, a grandson and a granddaughter. Bryan Greer, Minister of MusicBryan is Minister of Music and conducts the Chancel Choir, The Grove Singers, Cappella, the Shady Grove Brass, and administrates a multifaceted music ministry. A Nebraska native, his musical leadership has ranged from leading church music ministries of all sizes, to volunteer choral and orchestral ensembles, to academic music of the highest caliber. At home on both sides of the podium, Bryan has sung with the Omaha Symphony, Lincoln Symphony, the Berkshire Choral Festival, Omaha Chamber Singers, Clarion Chamber Choral, and other festival and semi-professional choral organizations. Bryan is a published composer with Hinshaw Music and Morningstar Music Publishers. Bryan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Nebraska Wesleyan University and a Master of Music degree in choral conducting from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. He maintains active memberships with the American Choral Directors Association, National Music Educators Association, and the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. Most importantly, Bryan is husband to Nichole and father to Morgan Elizabeth. Cindy Spieth, Administrative AssistantCindy is a northern gal who has lived in six different states before moving to Richmond in 2003 to become a hands-on grandma. She began working at Shady Grove UMC in May 2004 as the Administrative Assistant. Prior to Shady Grove, she has been a secretary at two other churches and a head teller at two banks. She absolutely loves working for the church and looks at her position more as a ministry than a job. She is mother to Heidi (Sam) and Joshua and gramma to Thea and Tegwyn. Karin Nelson, Secretary/ReceptionistKarin has been at Shady Grove United Methodist Church since 1987. She is the church Secretary/Receptionist. When you come to the church office Karin is one of the first people you will meet. She loves working with volunteers, interacting with the members, and enjoys her varied duties and ministry at Shady Grove including holding Bettie Reid’s dog “Precious.” Karin and her husband Tom, have a grown son and daughter.
