United Methodist Men

Meetings are held every third Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm in room G-111 at the church, except during the summer months of June, July and August, when the meetings become breakfast meetings and are held at a local restaurant.  The UMM Chaplain, Jim Draper, always has a short devotional message that he brings at that time and a delicious dinner is served at each business meeting as well.  There is a speaker at most monthly meetings to help educate the men and keep them up to date on community affairs and charities that may need their help.

All men of the church are always welcome and encouraged to attend any of the meetings and activities and you do not have to be a member to participate. Please email Bruce Helmbrecht, or call him at 789-0667, three days before the meeting you will be attending so that he can order enough food for everyone.

Current officers and telephone numbers for the 2011-2012 term are:

President – Roy Satterwhite – 798-8490
Vice President – Bruce Helmbrecht – 789-0667
Secretary – Dennis Pritts – 746-0867
Treasurer – Doyle Bock -386-8789
Chaplin – Jim Draper – 723-4231
Stewmaster – Gordon Johnson – 746-5728

Some of our events taking place throughout the year include:

  • The Brunswick stew preparation and sale two times per year, in October, at the UMW Bazaar and in March at the UMW Yard Sale. Proceeds from these two sales, which are our only fundraisers, go to help support church missions and local community charities.
  • A Thanksgiving style dinner at the November meeting
  • A Christmas banquet with entertainment when wives and special guests are invited
  • A Sweetheart banquet in February with entertainment when wives and special guests are invited
  • An outside picnic on the grounds in May
  • Assisting with the Vacation Bible School woodworking project in June. The kids actually build a piece of furniture themselves, with a little guidance from the men, and take it home for their use. This is always an extremely popular event with kids and the men alike.
  • A golf tournament or two as scheduled
Methodist ministry with men started over 200 years ago when John Wesley began a campaign for the souls of men. At Oxford University, Mr. Wesley worked with a group of young men realizing the great need for Christian fellowship and banded together to form the Holy Club. Since that time the Holy Club fundamentals have continued and have evolved through the years to what is now the United Methodist Men, or UMM.
